Will There be a Spider-Man 4?
Spider-Man fans who enjoyed the first two installment of Spider-Man movies had eagerly awaited the release of the third in May of 2007. However, some are even looking past that and wondering if there is going to be a Spider-Man 4 film. In this article we'll explore the popularity of the first two films, the upcoming third, and the possibility of a fourth.
The first Spider-Man movie, directed by Sam Raimi, features Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst as love interest Mary Jane Watson. Willem Dafoe plays Norman Osborn, also known as the Green Goblin, while James Franco plays the role of his son Harry. This film opened to rave reviews and is one of the highest-grossing films of all time. In this movie, orphaned Peter gets his special spider powers after being bitten by a bioengineered spider. In the course of the film, his uncle is killed and he vows to bring the killer to justice and fight crime. Norman Osborn becomes the Green Goblin, and abducts Mary Jane. Of course by the end of the film, good triumphs over evil and the Goblin is killed. However, things are left open ended enough for the viewer to want to see the sequel.
Spider-Man 2 also was directed by Sam Raimi and features Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco reprising their roles. Alfred Molina joins the cast as Otto Octavius, also known as the villain Doctor Octopus. This film picks up two years after the last one ended, and finds Peter Parker in dire straits. He's lost his job, is having money problems and has even lost Mary Jane to another man. In the course of the movie, he must fight Doctor Octopus, save Mary Jane and come to terms with his life as a superhero. He even gets together with Mary Jane by the end of the movie.
Spider-Man 3 is expected to hit theaters in May of 2007. Once again, this movie directed by Sam Raimi and starred many of the same cast members from the last two films. New cast members include Topher Grace as Eddie Brock Jr. (also known as Venom) and Thomas Haden Church as Sandman. So, what will be installed for Spider-Man 4? Director Sam Raimi has talked about the possibility, but at this point it is unknown whether or not Maguire and Dunst will reprise their roles. Only time will tell what the future holds for the Spider-Man movie franchise!
